Top Tracks of January

It’s shaping up to be an exciting year for music as january saw the release of singles/albums from artists old and new…

January might have been a slow and ever so slightly depressing month (as usual) but it thankfully gifted music lovers everywhere single releases, album announcements and drops, and plenty of festival lineup announcements.

I’m a massive fan of a good playlist and January certainly provided plenty of bangers to get everyone’s 2023 playlists off to a great start.

Here are my Top Tracks of January 2023…

Black curtains in the bag - billy nomates

The second track on Bristolian Tor Maries (a.k.a Billy Nomates) sophomore effort, it’s impossible to not be taken in by the jangly guitar and jittering synth beat that weaves through the track. It’s the perfect contrast to Nomates’ moody, slightly haunting raspy vocals.

This second album has provided me with an opportunity to get back into Billy Nomates’ back catalogue in January, revisiting the rock heavy sound and politically charged lyrics. ‘black curtains in the bag’ is a movement away from her discography and towards a more complex sounding, more personal sound I’m hoping she builds on in the future.

CArry you home - circa waves

The fifth track on Liverpudlian band Circa Waves’ latest release, their traditional indie-rock sound blends with twinkling synths and a slightly more electronic sound.

Lead vocalist Kieran Shudall’s lyrics are his most introspective and vulnerable yet. It’s a shift from their expected sound but it still packs a punch.

Mayday - cmat

I was lucky enough to see the Irish country-pop singer in Manchester last year and this new gem was in amongst her stellar set list, so it’s safe to say it’s no surprise that the song is on this list (and on repeat!).

A talent more of us should know about, this track combines silly lyrics, high impact instrumentals and great vibes which were much needed last month (and I’m sure will still be greatly appreciated throughout the year).

Fading like a picture - dma’s

A tease of what’s to come from these Australian indie-rockers, their soaring instrumentals and catchy vocals carry this track.

I missed out on tickets to their upcoming tour date in my city but even listening to this song from the sofa instead of the stadium still has an impact.

This is how we move - billie marten

In the heavy month that January proves to be, we crave a bit of light and this track certainly delivers.

Honey sweet vocals grace this song and it makes for lovely listening, exactly what I needed to see me through the bleakest month of the year.

So, there we have it, my Top Tracks of January 2023. What songs/albums did you have on repeat in January?

What I Read In March

March WAS a pretty full on month for me but, in amongst the birthdays, gigs and girl’s trips, i actually managed to squeeze in a fair bit of reading. I am slowly but surely making my towards my  Goodreads  goal for the year and glad to say, in March, I’ve done so reading some very good books indeed.  Let’s get into it… After previously being gifted Croucher’s debut, Reputation , I realised I’d not only found a new (to me) author but one whose books I find myself drawn to, not just because of the cool covers. The regency novel might be something we all know plenty about (especially thanks to a certain Netflix series) but Croucher once again twists the narrative, making things a lot more interesting. I follow Emily on Instagram  and, aside from taking gorgeous photos of life and literature, I’m sure she’ll do brilliant things if Heartbreak Houseshare is anything to go by. Its gradual romance and focus on female friendships make for a cosy and comforting read, wh...

Top TV of 2022

From apple tv to channel 4, the streaming services gifted us a wealth of brilliant telly last year.. So much so (as seems to be the theme of my posts looking back on last year) I had to limit my list down, narrowing it down to four great shows. No matter what seems to be going on in my life, I always seem to find the time to sit down and watch TV. As much as I (and my waistline!) would love a more active past time, there’s nothing I love more than unwinding with a hot chocolate in front of the telly. It’s truly amazing how shows can take you away from your life and your troubles and grab your attention fully..even just for 30 minutes. This is by no means the full list of TV shows I watched and loved last year but these are all shows that got me thinking, got me a little bit emotional and had me hooked from the offset. Everything i know about love (BBC IPLAYer/Hulu) If you’ve followed the previous version of this blog, or happen to follow me on social media, you’ll have figured ou...

What I Read in February

February was the month of love and, whilst i don’t have a significant other, i did spend last month doing plenty of the things i love..reading included! I have yet to make a dent in my Goodreads  goal for the year but I’m still happy to have got some reading in during the shortest month of the year.  Let’s get into it, then… I bought this one on my Kindle a while ago and picked it up on a whim last month. It was a story about a mythical creature we all know of but with plenty of twists and turns throughout. Not the most groundbreaking tale but it was certainly beautifully written prose and I raced through it. After reading - and loving Cliff’s debut - I decided to give her second offering a go last month (especially after I saw it on Emily’s Instagram  ). It took on the ever interesting and slightly terrifying prospect of putting our love and life in the hands of technology. There’s humour and lots of interesting parts to this, it took a little while to get into bu...
