Top Films of 2022

Get comfy, grab some popcorn and let’s conclude my favourites of 2022, with films.

Much like music, books and TV, I spent a fair bit of last year watching films. Now, much like anything I’ll talk about on this blog, I’ll preface this and say I’m by no means an expert. I have no clue about angles used in certain shots, or why X director decided one of the male leads shouldn’t wear a shirt (looking at you The Twilight Saga!), but something I do know is that I love film.

I think films feel nostalgic for me, as I love to watch movies with my family and some of my earliest and most cherished memories are going to the (now closed) cinema with friends to watch a (not necessarily good) film and experience our first taste of being a little bit ‘grown up’.

Anyway, before I go a bit too sentimental, let’s get into it. Here are the 5 films which make up my ‘Top Films of 2022’.

i want you back
(Prime video)

It wouldn’t be my list without a rom-com, would it? I might be perpetually single but there’s nothing I love more than a love story and this one, directed by Jason Orley, delivered.

Starring Jenny Slate and Charlie Day, the film follows Emma and Peter as they team up to sabotage their exes’ new relationships and win them back.

It’s an unconventional approach but the sharp writing and excellent comedic timing of its leads makes for an enjoyable watch.

Turning red
(Disney+)

I’m a massive kid at heart so of course I was excited for Disney’s newest animation. Luckily the film, directed by Domee Shi, lived up to the (self-imposed) hype.

Starring Rosalie Chiang and Sandra Oh, the film follows Meilin and how her unusual transformation shapes her relationships.

There’s a real sense of fun and nostalgia wrapped around this film but it also serves as a reminder to give your loved ones - and yourself - a bit of love.

Fresh
(DISNEY+)

Sometimes an utterly bizarre film makes lists like these and this film, directed by Mimi Cave, certainly fits that brief.

Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan, the film follows a single woman who finds out more than she bargained for about her latest date.

This is one of those films that, no matter how strange it gets, you can’t keep your eyes off it. It’s a film that certainly divided opinion but - I’d say - is definitely worth the watch..if you can stomach it.

Everything everywhere all at once
(Prime video)

There’s a massive buzz around this film, directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Schienert, and it’s not hard to see why.

Starring Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, the film follows a middle aged Chinese immigrant who is swept up into an adventure where only she can save the universe.

It’s a long haul of a film but there’s something brilliant and bonkers about it, for sure. The captivating performances and having no idea where the film will end up next makes for an interesting watch.

ANother round
(Netflix)

I’m not massive on dramas but this film, directed by Thomas Vinterberg, might just have changed my mind.

Starring Mads Mikkelsen, the film follows four friends and teachers as they experiment with alcohol consumption and see how it impacts their lives and relationships.

Usually this is the kind of film that I would bypass but it was proof that you should always be open to a film. It might not be what you’re expecting but sometimes it is exactly that which makes a film good.

So, there we have it, my ‘Top Films of 2022’. Have you seen any of these shows? What were some of your favourite films last year?

Top Albums of 2022: Part One

Here is the first part of my ‘top albums of 2022’. Featuring spector, miles kane and more! After the pandemic delayed the release of eagerly awaited songs and albums for many artists, 2022 proved to be the year the music industry got firmly back on its feet. So many new releases found their way into our ears (and onto our playlists) last year that I couldn’t possibly fit them into one post - believe me, I tried! After much deliberation, I narrowed it down to seventeen (yes seventeen! ) releases that I couldn’t stop listening to last year (and will probably continue to listen to this year - sorry neighbours!). So, let’s get into it! Here are the first 10 releases that have wormed their way on to my ‘Top Albums of 2022’, with release dates from January to May 2022.

Top TV of 2022

From apple tv to channel 4, the streaming services gifted us a wealth of brilliant telly last year.. So much so (as seems to be the theme of my posts looking back on last year) I had to limit my list down, narrowing it down to four great shows. No matter what seems to be going on in my life, I always seem to find the time to sit down and watch TV. As much as I (and my waistline!) would love a more active past time, there’s nothing I love more than unwinding with a hot chocolate in front of the telly. It’s truly amazing how shows can take you away from your life and your troubles and grab your attention fully..even just for 30 minutes. This is by no means the full list of TV shows I watched and loved last year but these are all shows that got me thinking, got me a little bit emotional and had me hooked from the offset. What I Read in February

February was the month of love and, whilst i don’t have a significant other, i did spend last month doing plenty of the things i love..reading included! I have yet to make a dent in my Goodreads  goal for the year but I’m still happy to have got some reading in during the shortest month of the year.  Let’s get into it, then… I bought this one on my Kindle a while ago and picked it up on a whim last month. It was a story about a mythical creature we all know of but with plenty of twists and turns throughout. Not the most groundbreaking tale but it was certainly beautifully written prose and I raced through it. After reading - and loving Cliff’s debut - I decided to give her second offering a go last month (especially after I saw it on Emily’s Instagram  ). It took on the ever interesting and slightly terrifying prospect of putting our love and life in the hands of technology. There’s humour and lots of interesting parts to this, it took a little while to get into bu...
